Viktor Korchnoi is the oldest active grandmaster in the world. His path is lined with victories in the strongest tournaments all over the world. Since Alexander Alekhine there is no champion of the world whom he hadn't met and defeated. The flash point of his career were three World Championship matches against Anatoly Karpov. In 1974 these titans met for the first time in the Candidates final, later in 1978 in Baguio and for the last time in 1981 in Meran. All these matches were won by Karpov. Korchnoi is the four time champion of Soviet Union from the years 1960, 1962-63, 1964-65 and 1970, five time European Champion and six time winner of the gold medal from the Chess Olympiads. In September 2006 he became the Senior World Champion.
